Sciatica generally is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg. Patients can describe it as a sharp, burning or electric-shock-like pain. In more severed cases it can cause tingling, numbness or weakness in the leg or foot.

Sciatica can have several causes, including a bulging or herniated disc, age-related changes in the spine, or narrowing around the nerves. Symptoms can vary considerably between individuals and may be aggravated by sitting, bending, coughing or certain movements.​
